Biosphere Reserve

In the west of Dumfries and Galloway lies an area of land that was designated in July 2012 as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which also includes parts of neighbouring South Ayrshire. These are regions that are recognised by UNESCO as being of high environmental value, where agencies, businesses and communities are making real efforts to manage the natural resource in a truly sustainable manner.

Our’ Biosphere contains some of Dumfries and Galloway’s most significant and iconic landscapes and wildlife, along with some of its most sensitive and rarest habitats so surely has to be on your list of places to visit whilst you’re here.
