Barn Owls in Dumfries and Galloway

Barn OwlDumfries & Galloway supports over 60% of the Scottish population and 10% of barn owls in the UK. These enigmatic pale owls breed in tree cavities, old buildings, barns and increasingly in nestboxes. Both male and female are white underneath and speckled light brown over the back and wings. They are often seen at dawn and dusk quartering silently over rough grassland hawking for voles and mice. The chicks hiss in the nest and the adults screech if disturbed.  WWT Caerlaverock have a remote camera in a nest boxe and the birds can be view 'live' throughout the breeding season.
