Teals in Dumfries and Galloway

TealThe teal is the smallest duck to be seen in Dumfries & Galloway and in large numbers on lochs, ponds and wetland areas right across the region in winter. Many birds making the long flight from breeding grounds in Arctic Russia. The males are predominantly grey on the flanks and back with a brown head with a green patch over each eye. They have a distinctive yellow triangle at the tip of the tail on each side. The female like most female ducks is brown. They have a distinctive light fluting call.
