Whooper Swans in Dumfries and Galloway

Whooper SwanLarge white swan with a wingspan of aver 2 metres. It has a long, yellow and black bill, with the yellow coming to a point towards the tip of the bill.  This distinguishes it from the smaller Bewick’s swan, a very occasional winter visitor which also has a yellow and black bill but with much more black at the tip. Whoopers arrive from Iceland in October and can be seen across the region till the end of March. The daily wild swan feeds at WWT Caerlaverock at 11am and 2pm give the closest views.
