Wigeons in Dumfries and Galloway

A medium sized duck found in winter right across the region on lochs, shores and fresh water bodies. The male has a chestnut brown head with a buff stripe up the forehead, silvery grey over the back and a pink breast, broad white wing bars are conspicuous in flight. The female is brown with a white belly, both sexes have a grey bill. The male has a distinctive whistling call.
